Rub Some of That Baby Aura on Me

by Gabrielle on July 4th, 2008

Many women (and men) in the midst of trying to conceive and having some trouble will start to avoid social situations where they know they will encounter pregnant women or babies. While these sights don’t usually bother me, I can understand how seeing others who have something you want so badly but don’t have (yet) can spark feelings of envy, longing, even worse, doubts about your own self worth.

But Fully Fertile: A Holistic 12-Week Plan for Optimal Fertility points out that this aversion could be counterproductive to your own efforts at reproduction.

Just like laughter and optimism tend to be contagious, and, conversely, hanging out with someone who is perpetually b*tchy can sour your own mood, some yoga gurus say,

If you want a baby, surround yourself with babies and pregnant women who are throwing off the vibration of babies and pregnancy. Expose yourself to them and allow those vibrations to be magnetized to your aura so that you are surrounded by positive and fertile pregnancy energy.

I dig that advice. Especially since I just said farewell to my eight month pregnant pal (who humored me with a big belly-to-belly rub to enhance the baby vibes) and we are hosting another expecting couple and their almost two year old for the holiday weekend. Babies everywhere!

What do you think about this advice? Does surrounding yourself with baby/pregnancy aura make sense to you, or is the presence of so much fertility sometimes a little too much to bear?

I think it’s bull. being around pregnant women and babies will no more affect my openness or ability to conceive and carry a child than having sex will.
eliminating negative feelings can have an overall positive impact on my well-being, but that’s all it has done.

Well, it’s true that being around positive people will make you feel more positive but I don’t know that being around fertile women will make me more fertile.

But I would do anything to be able to be around these women and not be hyper sensitive about my own inablility to conceive. I am tired of feeling like the giant white elephant in the room and I am tired of the strained friendships with women who can’t seem to NOT get pregnant.
