Celebrating Female Candidates and the Issues They Champion
I love that I am finally mature enough to appreciate, nay embrace, the opportunity to hang out with a ton of cool women congregated together in one room.
The occasion? A local fundraiser for the Pennsylvania Women’s Campaign Fund (PWCF). While not as large as this event, it was an equally magical moment for me. Some faces I knew, others I recognized, most I met for the first time. The purpose of PWCF is to support and encourage women’s election to the PA General Assembly, an assembly which currently ranks among the lowest in the US for percentage of female legislators. If our legislature were truly representative of my state’s demographics, we would have over 100 women in office, not 30.
There were Republicans and Democrats. Conservatives and Progressives. Candidates from across the state, with very different platforms and different issues that they were trying to raise with their campaign. There was one commonality: we were all women and we all saw the value of affordable and accessible health care and most importantly, the need to recognize women’s health issues as a policy priority.
I had a fabulous conversation with a women from Planned Parenthood. We talked about Choice and how the issue was so much larger than abortion. We talked about misconceptions around Planned Parenthood and the actual services that they provide. We talked about the need for early screening and treatment of cervical, ovarian and other cancers that can affect women’s fertility and the overall need for more education around fertility issues. Before we knew it, the mixer was over, food was getting cleared and we had to go.
I absolutely love events like this and the synergy that they create.
Speaking of synergy, on May 15th, thousands of bloggers will unite to talk about one topic: human rights. Be sure to visit Fertility Notes to see which parts of the U.N.’s Declaration of Human Rights matter most to me.
