Testing the Waters in the Privacy of Your Own Home
While hubby and I were waiting for my turn to get impregnated the other day, we had plenty of time to hang out in the small lobby. Michael pulled his mp3 player out of his pocket and his book out of my bag and immersed himself. I dutifully continued to chug my water and reached for the nearest magazine which happened to be Conceive.
I was immediately struck by the number of ads. Yes, pregnancy is big business. No surprise there. But what I wasn’t expecting was the amount of product, kits, vitamins, tools that one could order to assess and increase the odds of getting pregnant all from the privacy of your own home. I honestly had no idea.
There are kits like www.conceptionkit.com and www.fertell.com. There are vitamins to help you detox and vitamins to enhance your (and your partner’s) fertility. There is even an “Ovulation Watch” that guarantees your money back if you aren’t Pregnant in 3 Months (which, I am sorely tempted to test out since I don’t think they thought of me in their fine print).
Wow. Now women have been using home pregnancy tests (HPTs) for ages. Who among us hasn’t peed on a stick at least once in her life? But what of these other home kits – ones that test potential, possibilities? How much faith should we put into them and their results? Dr. Mallika Marshall of CBS’s The Early Show gave her opinion yesterday morning. While she gives the thumbs up to our beloved (and hated) HPTs and tests for blood sugar, she cautions against others, particularly those ordered directly online:
Do you know how, Marshall asks, when you buy a cell phone or DVD player, you just figure you’ll tinker with it until you get it to work, and you throw out the directions? Well, many people may treat these tests the same way, and fail to read the instructions or the fine print. At least if a medical professional is ordering the test, you know there are standards in place, and the professional will know how to interpret the results.
