Fertility Notes- a fertility blog with all the news your womb can use

Did She or Didn’t She? Does It Matter?

by Gabrielle on February 21st, 2008

This article and variations of it were all over the place this weekend. Marcia Cross is on the cover of the latest issue of Health magazine. Inside, she talks about her pregnancy and future plans. Marcia says:

We decided to skip our honeymoon and try In Vitro after the wedding. I had already been through infertility treatments. It’s very, very difficult to get pregnant in your 40s. It’s costly and tough on your body and your relationship. I don’t think I’ll have any more kids, but I’m not 100 per cent sure we won’t adopt.

But nowhere in the recent article are donor eggs mentioned, even though Marcia’s 2006 interview with USA Today has had saavy readers speculating for a while:

I don’t like the average woman being misled into thinking that fertility is something that goes on forever. When a woman gets older, they get a donor egg, which doesn’t make the baby any less beautiful or perfect. One’s own eggs only last so long, and sometimes at 43 or 44 you can have your own baby, but statistically it’s very difficult and expensive.

Did she use donor eggs to achieve her successful pregnancy and beautiful twin girls? Or did she undergo IVF using her own eggs? Does it matter? Some bloggers think the media should be more responsible in reporting later-in-life pregnancies. Orange from Orange Tangerine wrote:

I recognize that everyone has a right to medical privacy, and that you don’t necessarily want your child learning they came from donor gametes via a Google search. But time and time again, the media leaves out the details that remind people that the average woman is going to have infertility issues if she tries to get pregnant in her 40s.

Others simply question why it is so easy for celebrities (and others) to mention IVF, but not donor eggs?

Do celebrities have a responsibility to discuss their infertility issues? Is it a private affair? Is it a non-issue?
