February Focus on Our Hearts

by Gabrielle on February 20th, 2008

Valentine’s Day is over, but hearts are still our focus here at the Science and Health Channel Celebrate February as American Health Month by reading some of the great posts listed below.

It’s funny, but infertility and heart disease are often mentioned in the same sentence, not as cause and/or effect of each other, more so, as co-occurring effects of other conditions, such as PCOS, or Chlamydia. In fact, Anthony Azenabor, an associate professor of health sciences at UW-Milwaukee, has identified how two different kinds of Chlamydia can cause both coronary artery disease and miscarriages:

Solving one mystery gave him clues that he needed to figure out the other. By focusing on the immune system mechanisms in Chlamydia infections, Azenabor has identified an important link in seemingly unrelated health problems. The result could be new treatments and prevention strategies for both heart disease and infertility.

I am all for new treatments and prevention strategies.
