“Hold It Like a Dart”

by Gabrielle on February 19th, 2008

I think it’s safe to say that if you decide to embark on any ART (assisted reproductive technique) path, odds are you or your partner or BFF will need to get comfortable dealing with needles.

My morning routine currently consists of giving myself a little shot of Lupron in my thigh. It’s not a big needle; it’s the same size as someone with diabetes would use to inject insulin. But it’s a shot nonetheless, and one that is usually self-administered.

Now that this isn’t our first cycle and we have had experience with much larger needles, the morning shots aren’t as daunting as they once had been. But I can’t tell you how many pep talks, practice rounds and hand-holding our nurse did with us before I broke the seal, unwrapped the syringe and took the plunge (literally) myself.

Her best advice was, “hold it like a dart.”

The other day, hubby walked in on me shooting up, as it were. And he laughed and laughed and laughed.

When I play darts, I usually need a few practice flicks of the wrist. You know, to make sure your aim is true, the force will be just right….

Well, that’s how I do my morning injection. I need a few practice jabs in the air to make sure my aim is true, the force will be just right, and to give me a minute to get my mind around the fact that I am willingly sticking a sharp object into my body. And besides, I am simply following my nurse’s instructions.

Fellow ART’ers, what advice can you give/have you been given to make those daily pricks a little less prickly?
