At what point in the getting pregnant process does it make sense to begin obsessing about all of the really cool things you can buy if you have a baby?

Last month we spent a fantastic day at the beach with our another couple who are also trying to conceive. After lunch, we somehow spent the entire afternoon critiquing strollers and baby bjorn-type options from their 4th floor balcony that overlooked the boardwalk. They knew so much! My partner and I were left to feeble comments like, “I like that color,” and “ooh, that one has a cup holder!” Our friends could point out makes and models; they could even run down a list of pros and cons of the most popular models.

We had no idea.

Pregnancy, let alone parenthood, still feels so far away for us. Other than a few wistful ooohs and aahhs at the REI, we haven’t really delved into the world of post-conception commerce. I had a taste of it at my sister-in-laws baby shower. I got a little more of it today when we babysat her 2-month old daughter.

She came equipped with a car seat that strapped into a stroller that was bearing numerous bags that all opened into diaper pads or unfolded to display cavernous nooks and crannies that held extra diapers, clothes, milk (we like to call it booby juice) and other things that it seems you cannot live without when baby is in tow.

Of course, our little niece slept through the whole visit. Not once did we need to take her for a walk in her designer stroller or dive into her bags of goodies. But if you were even curious about all of the goodness that you can get once you are successfully preggers, check out Daddy Types, the weblog for new dads. Hint: this is where my knowledgeable pals get the 411.
