Fertile Foods?
by Gabrielle on September 17th, 2007
Sometime this afternoon, I am going on a field trip. The brand new Wegmans has finally arrived in our area and it is rumoured to be the Best. Store. Ever. We’ll see. I am a TJ’s kind of gal so I have viewed all of the hype and hoopla with some skepticism. But…it has been a long time coming and I feel as if I have to make at least a preliminary scouting mission.
If I were to fill my basket strictly with foods that would increase fertility, what would those be?
Well, it depends on who you ask. I spent a day searching the web and sifting through contradictory reports and findings and here is the short list**:
- Increase your zinc – you’d be amazed how many recipes you can add pumpkin seeds to – I know my husband was

- Reduce caffeine
- Reduce fatty foods
- Cut down on alcohol
- Can’t get enough of that folic acid! So that means:
- Dark green, leafy vegetables
- Whole wheat bread
- Lightly cooked beans and peas
- Nuts and seeds
- Sprouts
- Oranges and grapefruit
- Poultry (yuck. We don’t eat the bird)
- Fortified breakfast cereals
**I am sure that by the time I post this there will be some other report or finding that adds or subtracts to the list. Basically, if you are looking for an excuse to eat something you don’t normally stock in the house, you can usually find it. A recent Harvard report even links ice cream to fertility.
Most experts agree that it is not so much what you eat, but how much. Recent studies are linking Body Mass Index (BMI) and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) success rates. This new report claims to have conclusive evidence that obesity negatively affects egg implantation after conception. Some reproductive clinics will not even accept women with a BMI of 30 or higher.
How do you rate? Check your BMI here. If you believe I am 5’ 5 “(which for some reason, my husband does not), then I have just a few more pounds to go. Now, on to the store!
